COVID-19 CRISIS: A TIME FOR VIGILANCE AND QUICK ACTION
The present crisis has brought to the fore many heart-warming and praiseworthy examples of altruism and good neighbourliness. It has also, sadly and, perhaps, inevitably, created opportunities for those anti-social and criminal elements who will be happy to take advantage of the current situation, irrespective of the costs to others. The National Police Chief’s Council spokesman on crime is reported in The Times ( 27th March ) to warn against an increase in cyber crime and states that organised crime will see the present emergency as an opportunity.
Meanwhile, companies and businesses may lack essential support staff engaged in online security and other fraud prevention measures.
At the same time, the Courts are grappling with the effects of the virus and normal working modes are being radically revised.
Banks will clearly have less staff to deal with suspicion of fraud.
It is a rapidly changing and worrying picture.
Accordingly, this needs to be a time of extra vigilance and rapid response. The fact is that, when money has been obtained by fraud, it can be moved very quickly. Happily, measures are available to freeze accounts and trace assets which can be accessed very quickly, with expert help.
