Direct and Public Access

Since the introduction of the Public Access Rules in 2004, it is now possible for members of the public to instruct barristers directly.

This means that qualified barristers can act directly for members of the public without going through a solicitor. This is often a direct, beneficial and cost effective method of reviewing whether or not litigation will be necessary.

Barristers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board and its Code of Conduct which also covers Public Access Rules. For more information about the Code of Conduct and Public Access Rules, we recommend that you consult the Bar Council and Bar Standards Board websites. The Bar Standards Board has published guidance that explains how the Public Access Scheme works - “Public Access Guidance for Lay Clients”.
