We are delighted to announce Sam Carter has been appointed as our new Chief Executive & Director of Clerking at 33 Chancery Lane.

Sam joins with a wealth of experience having been a barristers’ clerk for 20 years, many of which have been spent as a senior clerk. 

Sam has a profound understanding and enviable knowledge of the international and commercial markets, having dealt with large international disputes and clients throughout the UK and Europe, US, Latin America and Caribbean, Asia Pacific, and Middle East. 

He is responsible for leading and managing client relationships and implementing strategic growth and business development within our specialist practice areas, as we cement our position as a leading set in financial wrongdoing, across civil and criminal litigation and inquiries.

New members, Olivia Chaffin-Laird, Nick James, and Christopher Snell all join at the same time.

Olivia has a commercial practice in banking, finance and financial regulation matters as well as fraud, company professional negligence, partnership, and insolvency disputes. Her cases are often complex, high value and high stake.  

She is recognised for her meticulous preparation and attention to detail, combined with thorough and tenacious advocacy. Olivia provides a clear, analytical approach with a degree of pragmatism.

Nick has an extensive financial crime practice in bribery, fraud, and money laundering. He also acts in proceeds of crime matters, very recently in the consolidated appeals in the Court of Appeal of R v Haden and others [2024] EWCA Crim 344, on postponement in confiscation proceedings.

More widely, Nick also has a sports law practice, recently representing the head of the Belarus athletics team, charged with violations of the World Athletics Integrity Code of Conduct.

Christopher has a commercial litigation practice, particularly in financial services and banking and finance disputes, insolvency (both corporate and personal), civil fraud and asset recovery, cryptocurrency, company, and contract matters. He also acts in costs disputes and funding, particularly litigation funding, DBA’s, CFA’s and detailed assessment.

His cases often have an international and offshore dimension. Chris conducted significant offshore litigation arising out of the liquidation of several large US insurance companies following the conviction of the ultimate beneficial owner for bribery and insurance fraud. He has also given expert evidence in proceedings before the Court of First Instance in Hong Kong concerning matters of English civil procedure. Christopher’s profile is here.
